We like to grow what we eat
Despite weeks of stormy weather, Max and Gaye waved their magic weather wand, and we relished the first food garden visit of the season under clear skies and sunshine at Conningham.
And what a delight to join nonagenarian Loes, in her lovely north-facing garden – flowers, fruit trees, native plants, a vegie patch and chook run combining with a beautiful view out over North West Bay.
The first ever Northern Food Garden Group visit was a major success with 30 enthusiastic people turning up with great contributions to the produce and morning tea tables. There was some sun, not too much wind, and even some Northern warmth in the air, as we looked around host Denby's great garden. After sharing our food growing experiences, many good chats, and a great morning tea, everyone left with a smile on their face and produce, seeds or plants in their hands. This was a brilliant start to what promises to become a vibrant Northern group. Read all about it below.
We like to grow what we eat
On a day when solid early morning rain would have persuaded most organisers to cancel their events, presenter Steven and I decided to go ahead with a planned Espalier workshop. I am glad we did, because further rain held off until mid-day, and that gave us just enough time. As we ended, the rain returned.
There is a lot of material about Espalier on the internet, but seeing a garden full of espaliered fruit trees, and hearing what Steven learned while working with many fruit tree varieties over the years, really set this apart from any YouTube video.
