FGG Newsletter August 2025

          ๐Ÿซ› Food Garden Group newsletter - August 2025  ๐Ÿซ›

We like to grow what we eat

________________________________________________________________________________

Welcome to the 2025-2026 Food Garden Group season!

Winter is a busy period for many food gardeners because they use the dormancy period of fruit trees, berries and perennial food plants like asparagus to prune, fertilise and move plants, making changes for the season ahead.

For those who have had a well-deserved rest from food gardening, this August newsletter is a wake-up call - Spring is not far off. It is time to remove all the pesky weeds that are slowly taking over your food garden and get pruning, fertilising, sowing and planting! But no need to panic! Enjoy your time in the garden.

Visit Fern Tree Maria and Michel 2025

This beautiful garden at Fern Tree on the lower slopes of Kunanyi provided a stunning setting for the final Southern Food Garden Group visit of the season. With extensive protected areas for food crops nestled among towering eucalypts and other native plants, we had a chance for a close up look at how two keen gardeners have managed the challenges of a steep site, cold climate, and extensive wildlife pressure to create a thriving and productive space for growing food.

Visit Ravenswood Nicki 2025

Growing rosehips, pruning a split apple tree branch, future garden plans including a Lazutin style beehive and massive yields from tomato plants were amongst the conversation at the final northern garden visit for this season. Despite only being 7 months old, Nicki's garden in Ravenswood was filled with productive vegetable beds and a mix of new and established fruit trees.

Visit David and Deb 2025

After some very welcome early morning rain, David and Deb's garden in Youngtown provided a lovely setting for our March northern garden visit. An attractive ornamental garden led us to a productive food garden including numerous fruit trees, raised vegetable beds, a potting shed and a glasshouse providing lots to explore.

Visit Mornington Ailsa 2025

On a cool autumn morning, we gathered at Ailsa’s impressive property in Mornington to see how, in the past 10 years, she’s overcome some significant issues with her plot to create an incredibly productive garden. Keep reading to see why most of us who attended went home a little inspired and a lot jealous at what we saw.
