About us

 Who we are

The Food Garden Group (FGG) is a group of Tasmanians who like to share skills, surplus produce, seeds, seedlings and plants. Some of us have farms. Others have large gardens in rural areas. Some of us have suburban gardens. Some members have a little bit of space around their unit or grow food on their  balcony.  Some of us have decades of food gardening experience. Many others are novices.

The aim is to inspire each other and learn from each other. The group makes vegie gardening a social activity where you meet like-minded people.

What we do

We have a Facebook page where people ask questions and discuss topics at any point in time.

For those who want more, The Food Garden Group Blog provides a wealth of food garden knowledge written specifically for Tasmanian soils and climate conditions.

Our monthly newsletter advertises food garden visits. It also informs people about other Tasmanian food gardening activities and developments and provides info that is relevant to that month.

Our food garden visits are not in an ‘open garden scheme’ where people present their garden as pretty as possible, and people walk through it without actually meeting other gardeners.

Instead, we meet as a group with the host discussing what is happening in their garden, after which questions are answered by whoever has knowledge on the subject. There sometimes is a demonstration of a particular food-garden skill or process. We finish with a morning tea, and produce, seeds and plants are exchanged free of charge on our Produce Table.

Our food garden visits are a great way to meet other food gardeners, learn new skills and go home with new food plants.

Our FGG Extra blog shares how to process your produce and great recipes. It also covers past food garden visits in words and photos, and it is the home of our past newsletters.

How to join

Tasmania has a cool island-climate that is different from the rest of Australia. This creates food gardening opportunities and limitations. For this reason membership is limited to those who live in Tasmania, because discussions about plants that can't be grown here and climates we don't have would be too confusing.

If you live in Tasmania you are very welcome to join, no matter what your level of food gardening experience is. We have some very experienced food gardeners that are still learning more and many newcomers to food gardening who gain knowledge and expertise through this blog and by learning from more experienced members.

Tasmanians can join our lively Facebook page by searching on Facebook for Food Gardeners Tasmania and then requesting membership.

If you have no interest in Facebook, no problem!

Please join us on our popular food garden visits. You can put yourself on the list for a food garden visit by RSVPing as soon as our newsletter comes out on the first of the month (from August to April). The best way to not miss out on these visits is to subscribe to our newsletter.

You can subscribe to the newsletter on our FGG Newsletters page by clicking on the words To subscribe click HERE and following the prompts. Subscription starts when you click on a link in the confirmation email you receive. You can expect to receive an FGG newsletter on the first of the month from August to April.
