Jan welcomed us to her amazing small garden in Dynnyrne for our December Food Garden visit.
Jan's garden may be small - just 365 square metres - but it's a treasure trove of food plants, flowers and trees. creating a gorgeous green oasis. To create her garden, Jan had to remove a number of large trees & LOTS of yellow iris and ivy - keeping just a couple of mature trees as a backdrop.
Exploring around the garden, there are pots galore with vegetables and fruit trees sharing space with native and exotic plants of all description.
Nestled amongst the trees it creates a lovely immersive garden, but Jan noted that it can also create some disease challenges (like rust and mildew) due to poor air circulation.
In addition to the vegies in pots throughout the garden, there are raised vegie beds down the side of the house - all packed with produce.
Jan is preparing a new bed for planting in the front yard and trialing a soil recipe from her neighbour - a mix of compost, mushroom compost, cow manure and sheep manure. We'll be interested to hear how that works out!
The garden contains numerous fruit trees, including plums, peaches and apples - some are espaliered behind the vegie beds, while others are nestled in the flower beds.
There is also this fascinating variegated meyer lemon - the young fruit is striped, before turning yellow when ripe.
Jan explained that she reincarnates her garden every few years, with plants relocated to find just the right spot - the lemon tree above has been moved 4 times before finding it's happy place in the backyard. She said she recently tried moving some small apple trees, but these are currently "sulking" and might take a bit longer to recover.
It seems that in addition to collecting plants, Jan also collects watering cans!! (LOL)
Thanks for the lovely morning, Jan - it was so great to see your beautiful garden.
As always there was a fabulous selection on the produce and morning tea tables with delicious rhubarb featuring on both - yum ...
Best wishes for the festive season from Max, Gaye and the rest of the FGG team - enjoy the holidays and we look forward to seeing you in the New Year!! 🎉
