In My Garden - Val - September 2020
Spring has definitely arrived in Howden. Come and see it all in Val's garden.
Many of my fruit trees are in blossom including the above cherry plum, the apricot, nectarine, almond and peaches. The buds on the pears and plums are swelling.
The quince has its leaves but no flowers yet, an oddity of this tree. Once the flowers arrive, they are pink and the tree becomes very beautiful.
Late last summer, I finished erecting my hothouse and since then have been experimenting with crops in self-watering pots. The snow peas grew through the winter and now spring has arrived, they have started producing. They have outgrown their space but continue to fruit.
I raised some more seedlings of snow peas, and they are now planted into the outside vegetable garden.
The lettuce and radicchio have been a great addition to winter salads.
Outside, the brassicas have been a winter staple and are still producing. The sprouting broccoli planted in summer is starting to flower, but succession planting means that I have more plants still maturing.
The Tuscan kale did not produce much and is now going to seed, so I will be sowing some more soon. My Brussels sprouts are just finished but have produced probably 100 sprouts which was wonderful as the cabbages failed to heart.
And finally, a look at the garlic/onion bed, which is going great!
